How to Prepare for Your Permanent Makeup Appointment: Tips & Tricks
Preparing for your permanent makeup appointment ensures flawless pigment retention and a comfortable healing process.
The most important rule? Avoid blood-thinning substances like alcohol, caffeine, aspirin and ibuprofen for 48 hours beforehand, and pause any harsh skincare products like retinol near your treatment area.
Permanent makeup (PMU) is a game-changer. Whether you are opting for perfectly defined machine hairstroke, nano brows or microbladed brows, waking up with your brows already perfect saves precious time every morning.
However, getting a cosmetic tattoo isn't quite like getting a standard facial. The secret to beautifully healed results and a smooth session lies in how you prepare your skin and body beforehand.
If you have a PMU appointment coming up, here is your ultimate checklist of tips and tricks to get ready: (see Precare Information)
1. The 24 Hour Blood Thinning Rules
The last thing your artist wants is excessive bleeding during your session, as it can push the pigment out and lead to patchy or uneven results.
No Alcohol or Caffeine: Avoid alcohol for 24 hours before, and skip your morning caffeinated coffee or energy drink on the day of your appointment. Both act as stimulants and blood thinners.
Skip Pain Relievers: Avoid Aspirin and Ibuprofen or any products containing them, please check the packets
Ditch the Supplements: Fish Oil and Vitamin E supplements for about a week before your session. Avoid Vitamin A for 1 month.
2. Skincare Adjustments
Your skin needs to be in its absolute healthiest, most natural state.
Pause Retinol & Acids: Stop using skincare products containing Retinol, Retin-A, or AHAs/BHAs (exfoliants) on the treatment area for at least 7 to 14 days before. These ingredients thin the skin, increase sensitivity, and can cause the pigment to fade faster.
Avoid Harsh Treatments: Stay away from chemical peels, laser treatments and heavy facials for at least 2 to 4 weeks prior.
Steer Clear of the Sun: Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning beds for 1-2 weeks before. Sunburned or tanned skin cannot be safely tattooed.
3. Area-Specific Preparation For Your Eyebrows
Do not pluck, wax, thread, or tint your eyebrows for at least 1 week before your appointment.
Let your natural hair grow out as much as possible so your artist can properly map out the most flattering shape for your bone structure.
4. Mentally Prepare for the Healing Process
Remember that PMU is a two-step process. You will need a touch-up session 6 to 8 weeks after your initial appointment to perfect the color and shape.
In the days following your session, your new makeup will appear much darker and bolder than the final healed result.
Expect some light scabbing and flaking, and be prepared to keep the area completely clean and dry while it heals. You can prepare by reading our aftercare instructions prior to your treatment at Salon 21 Bristol
5.The Day of the Appointment: Hydration
Dress for Comfort: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
Staying hydrated and eating a light meal right before your appointment will completely transform your comfort levels during the session.
Drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your treatment plumps and conditions your skin from the inside out, making it significantly more pliable and receptive to the tattooing process
Well-hydrated skin heals more efficiently and allows the pigment to settle beautifully rather than pushing it away.
Pairing that hydration with a light, nutrient-dense meal an hour or two before you arrive keeps your blood sugar levels perfectly stable.
Sitting through a multi-hour cosmetic tattoo triggers a minor adrenaline rush; arriving on an empty stomach can lead to jitters, lightheadedness, or an increased sensitivity to discomfort.
A balanced meal acts as an internal anchor, keeping you calm, physically relaxed, and ready for a flawless treatment.
